Blokada 5 for Android and odd pop up sites

I’m using blokada 5 (obtained from the official site) on a pixel 7.

I’ve been getting a lot of pop up websites with gibberish names ending in .site, .website, .online, .space and .ai, they appear as if they are randomly generated names, and direct me to ultimatesurferprotector.com (which I have blocked).

I’m using the oisd, energized and duckduckgo blocklists.

Anything else i can do?

It also appears usually twice, once with a www. at the beginning and once without.

Hi, welcome to our community

First question: How long have you had this problem? Have you installed any questionable apps (or apps from outside the Play Store) on your phone since then?

Hi.

To be clear, it only shows up when I visit two particular websites, and somehow if I block these urls before trying to access the web page, it’s fine, otherwise I get pop up pages which is irritating because they keep appearing as you use the sites, not just on first access.

The only non-playstore apps I have are blokada and newpipe.

I’m just wondering if it’s some sort of spoofing where they insert a fake url somehow, because how many could they have if they are genuine?

If this only happens on specific websites, then it’s almost certainly caused by those sites themselves. Some sites use aggressive ad scripts that generate random-looking domains and trigger repeated redirects while you browse, that’s why you keep seeing new ones. It’s not spoofing or something coming from your device, and not related to Blokada. The reason pre-blocking works is because it prevents those scripts from loading in the first place.

In cases like this, additional/other blocklists could help, but since the domains are often dynamically generated, it may require continuously blocking new ones or avoiding those sites altogether.

So until they run out of combinations of letters, they keep coming. That’s awesome…

I found though that if I open the website, go to blokada before I click on anything, and block the popup link, I can go back and refresh the main website and not have any popups the whole time I am there. But if I don’t block the first one, I’m done in.

Is there a way to block anything that ends in .site, .website, .ai, .space or the others by any other means than as they occur, perhaps a custom blocklist? (I don’t know how to do that, but that information has to be stored somewhere on my phone)

In Blokada 5, you can’t add such a rule. It’s only possible in Blokada 6.
If you want to see if adding such rules will solve your problem, we offer a free one-week trial period directly in the app.
