iOS 15.2.1: Blokada blocks many apps when on cellular, disabling only option

Hi,

I got Blokada from the iOS appstore
I’m on iphone SE 2020, OS version 15.2.1
Many apps fail to connect to their servers to fulfill their purpose.
Examples:
Jelbi (public transport in Berlin)
Spond (group organisation and messaging)
In Brave Browser, the search with duckduckgo doesn’t work any more
I face the issues since updating the phone OS to 15.2.1 (I think I was on 14.x) before.
Updating the Blokada App to the latest version changed the issue from “no host/ server found” to timeouts/ ever spinning spinners
I tried multiple blocklists, but even with no blocklist selected, the issues remain.
When I’m on WiFi (WLAN) it works, but obviously this is not a solution for a mobile phone.
Only option is to disable Blokada completely
This is especially unfortunate, since I subscribed to Blokada Cloud recently.
To be fair, it worked perfectly before, and for most of the time I used the free version.
Still, paying a subscription for something unusable is suboptimal, so please provide help

Best
Alex

Hello,

Would you mind trying these steps:

  1. install the network tool from Hurricane Electrics
  2. disable WiFi
  3. with Blokada enabled
    1. In the HE app, navigate hamburger menu → SSL/TTL information
    2. enter: cloud.blokada.org → OK
    3. status should say “No Error”
  4. with Blokada uninstalled (not only disable, but complete uninstall)
    1. In the HE app, navigate hamburger menu → SSL/TTL information
    2. enter: cloud.blokada.org → OK
    3. status should say “No Error”
  5. If there are errors, please attach a screenshot of the error here or in an e-mail hello@blokada.org
  6. re-install blokada, hit “restore purchase” in bottom of the screen if purchase options appear

Hi, and thanks for your quick reply, I appreciate that!
I did the above, and did not see errors in step 3
However, I entered “duckduckgo.com” and received a popup
“Resolver error: nodename nor servname provided, or not known”
Same for “google.de

I did not yet uninstall Blokada, since what you wrote for step 3 seems to work fine.
Kindly let me know if that helps, or what else I can do.

And these works fine when you have WiFi active?
Do you see any activity in the Blokada app if you check the Activity tab?

Yes

Currently, not.

Iirc, I saw activity before the update to the latest Blokada version.

OK, I found smth:
Before 2 mins, I not only had DNS set to Blokada, but also VPN

Now I re-installed Blokada, and only selected DNS (Blokada VPN was not available anymore, anyway)
Now it seems to work.

And if you check the “certificates” section in the HE app when you finish the SSL/TLS lookup,
does it match the following?

cloud.blokada.org
R3
ISRG Root X1

Does the certificates info look different when you run the check on mobile vs WiFi?

Oh okay!
Perhaps an old VPN profile was still active from before you updated

Probably, that was the case.
Maybe it was even my misconception, that Blokada would still use a VPN that led me to enabling this.
But, now the traffic is routed through cloud.blokada.org DNS, and does not need a VPN any more. Is that correct?

Thanks a lot for your effort, although eventually revealing a user error!

You will only need the VPN profile if you also enable connecting to a Blokada Plus location (the real VPN).
Blokada no longer requires a fake VPN for the adblocker features
