Blokada 5 for Android: Beta (finished)

Amazing feedback @Dar, thanks a lot.

Let me address the issues point by point:

Blokada v5 still unable to work for Google Chrome, most said it is due to Chrome built-in DNS. If so then how does v4 works while v5 doesn’t?

This is interesting. In the activity log, are you sure the blocked entries are for the website refresh you just did, and not for some old one? Your screenshot says “4 minutes ago” so it may have been previous requests that got blocked, not this one.

If you haven’t yet, please share the entire log with me on hello@blokada.org

  1. Close the app
  2. Start the app, activate it, let it connect
  3. Refresh the Forbes website
  4. Go back to Blokada and share log (dots menu top right)

I want to see your network configuration there, log should tell me.

Blokada private DNS does not work (v5 beta apk)

I don’t understand, it’s not supposed to. This is a separate system setting.

There’s no “gear icon” next to Blokada icon. (I’m on Android Pie 9.1)

Seems like on your device, there’s the right arrow instead of the gear icon. Have you tried taping it? What does it show?

@Karol… that was interesting. I got tired of 5.0.9 stop recording activity every couple of minutes, so I thought it might help to reinstall. Went to Settings…Apps and Notifications. In Blokada 5, I forced it closed, then went to Storage. I cleared tge cache AND the files/settings, then uninstalled Blokada. Went to my backup apk and installed 5.0.9 beta. Opened it after install, figuring it would be a clean install and I would need to reset everything. To my surprise, not only did Blokada 5 start up with my settings intact, but they were the settings from first thing this morning, settings that I had changed a half dozen different ways (per an email from you).

Any idea how that might happen? Effectively, I removed everything, cache, settings, app, but somehow, my settings from first thing this morning were back. Huh?

Android has a feature called Auto Backup, and starting with 5.0.9, Blokada supports it. Meaning, Android will backup Blokada settings, and restore them when reinstalled.

As with everything on Android, there’s a catch. It seems the backup may happen at a random moment. So it probably did not backup your newest config before you uninstalled, hence you got restored to some “older” config.

I don’t normally complain about free apps. Its unbecoming. But with this update I can literally TASTE the iOS. I know why you are chasing that audience, I know why developers love Apple. iPhone users are known to spend money on apps.

There are, as I see it, multiple problems with this…

  1. I want to be in control of my device. I need to know what is happening, and be able to control my device. Having a backup of Blokada settings is fine, as long as the user can control the backup. In this particular case, there are no settings for the backup and with or without control, we weren’t even told there was a backup.

  2. We need (I need) to know where those backups are stored AND be able to control, during install, whether or not to restore those settings. There are many reasons for doing a fresh, clean install (most especially during participation in an alpha or beta test scenario), and the ability to be able to do one as/when the user wants is necessary.

I wanted to do a clean reinstall of Blokada, and to that end, did everything that I would normally do in order to get a clean reinstall. Unknown to me, there is no way to do a clean reinstall, because, in spite of the caution in app settings that clearing the files removes all files and settings, doing so doesn’t clear all files and settings. This unknown settings backup does NOT get removed and as a result, all of the settings I was trying to eliminate (some of which I had actually eliminated) were restored, and the attempt at a clean reinstall failed.

I would suggest giving the user some form of control of that backup (even just yes, no, restore or delete) and failing that, remove that backup which doesn’t comply with the app settings.

Hi,
One UI and engine is easier to maintain than different UIs and engines. That’s the reason why it’s getting edited.
What exactly do you dislike? Could you be more specific? Since this is an early beta it is still subject to change but we need feedback to enhance it

I’ve followed all material design guidelines on Android. It’s all standard Android components, except the big power on button, which is custom made on both platforms. Some parts, like some detail screens, are maybe not following the guidelines precisely, but those are minor issues I’ll be addressing as we go along.

@GreggH

You’re right of course, and the system gives you this control. Search for “backup” in the system preferences. It backups to your google drive, if that’s setup on your device, and that’s standard Android feature existing for years now.

I’ll adapt this in Blokada of course, we’re talking about something implemented a few days ago. For me, the main goal is to preserve user account ID, because we’re getting a lot of users asking to restore their ID since they did not take note of it. The rest of the settings can as well be not backed up I believe. But then, users have been asking for settings backup for years now (literally).

Hi,
On a pocophone f2pro miui12 Android 10, i am finding blockada deactivated each morning. The app is still running on background.app is set to bypass all power management and autostart.

Second point. Is there a widget scheduled like on v4 ans also an Addon to work with tasker.

Karol…

I know that Android does automatic backups. It offers no control of which apps to backup, but most apps ask if you want to restore the settings, at least, it has been that way for me. I understand that it is new (5.0.9 is the first version to restore settings) and will just have to be careful of it if I need a reinstall.

I understand some Tasker support was added in V4.3, and looking at Automating Blokada's behaviour with Tasker Blokada should show up a Tasker Plugin.
Is this function implemented in the current beta? I cannot find it in Tasker

V5.0.9 Activity list view opens but blank content with Show All, Blocked, or Allowed.

I need to allow a Zendesk subdomain that is blocked. URL opens my support ticket update (for a different app, (not Blokada).

Testing update: Blokada 5.0.9 becomes “inactive” when the phone is not being used for a long time for example at night and during work time.

By “inactive” I mean that the large button in the app says active but it does not block anything at the hostlist and DNS level. I have also reproduced this couple of times.

One peculiar thing I noticed today was it became active automatically after some time of using the phone. Previously I used to manually turn off and on.

This same problem persisted in v4.7.3 and v4.8.

I am on Android, MIUI 12.
Battery optimization is turned off, Always on VPN and autostart are ON.

My guess is MIUI 12 is causing the problem.

Hi, first of all i would like to thank the devs for this app. Now i want to ask if there’s a plan to add ‘import/export settings’ feature in future? And also i see blokada app size is growing in beta builds, hope the app doesn’t get heavy and take a toll on system, cause v4 builds are very small in size and doesn’t affect system performance. Thnx

The recent version of the Beta 5 works perfectly fine. I was wondering if you could add the option for us to also add our own host lists & Widgets just like in the previous versions of Blokada. Thank you

Hi !!
I have Samsung galaxy A50 (android 10, One UI 2.0), and after today’s monthly update, blokada stopped working. I have never had a problem before (blokada 4 or blokada 5)
